The Dartspin™, from Hyperlastics™, is a minnow-style lure with a willow leaf spinner perminantly anchored in the tail. The action is quite remarkable!
There is more to the design of this unique lure than initially meets the eye. First of all, it is made from a custom plastic material called, Softough™. Softough is a super plastic that is soft and pliable like a normal soft plastic, yet tough and durable. For instance, the spiral anchor embedded in the tail of the Dartspin will withstand tugging, pulling and stretching without pulling out. In prototype testing, one angler caught 148 largemouth bass on a single Dartspin!
Another design element is the internal paths and voids that are molded into the Dartspin bait fish shape. Molded channels provide rigging options that include weedless Texas-rigging on a weighted swimbait hook, swim jig, bladed jig, football jig, drop-shot, Carolina rig, umbrella rig, or even as a trailer on a spinnerbait or buzzbait! My favorite way is rigged on a Little Pek-R jig head.
The Dartspin may be one of the most versatile lures available. Whether fished weightless on top or dragged on a heavy jig head on the bottom, the Dartspin has already become a favorite for both fresh and saltwater anglers. You name it, the Dartspin will catch it, bass, pike, stripers, redfish, even bluefin tuna up to 200 lbs!
As the Dartspin becomes more widely available, it will be interesting to see what kind of new and unexpected uses and techniques anglers develop with the Dartspin. Like so many of the lures that Patrick Sebile has designed over the years, the Dartspin was designed with an eye on usefulness in a variety of conditions, and less about designing for specific species. Thankfully, for us that target bass, this little gem fits right in with the wide variety of tactics and challenges we face on the water.
NOTE: As with other super plastics, Hyperlastics baits made with Softough material need to be stored separate from standard soft plastic baits to prevent the two from reacting. Hyperlastics™ is a brand from a Patrick Sebile Creation, A Band of Anglers.
