BigIndianaBass.com May Madness Tackle Pack Giveaways!
Sponsored by RedShad.com
I have been a fan of Big Indiana Bass since its start and I am proud to be able to partner with Brian at BIB to bring you this fun little sweepstakes. We're going to giveaway a different lure pack every Friday in the month of May. Simply stop by the Big Indiana Bass Facebook Page and "like" the site. If you're a fan of the page, then you're already eligible to win. We'll compile all the names who are fans beginning on Friday, May 6th and randomly select a winner from that list each week. Every Friday during the month of May, we'll award a tackle pack to another winner. All you have to do is regularly check the Big Indiana Bass Facebook Page to see if your name is the one that has been chosen for that week's tackle pack. If so, simply reply to the post and claim your prize. It couldn't be easier. You can also keep up-to-date by regularly visiting BigIndianaBass.com.
The Tackle Packs:
These are 4 separate light-line techniques that have made me into a bit more of a finesse angler that I ever planned on being. But one tends to return to where one's success has come from. More often than not, for me, it has been using one or more of these finesse rigs. RY
Week #1
Wacko-de-Mayo Lure Pack
Celebrate the arrival of May with a wacky jig! In 2008 I won 2 BFL tournaments using the Little Pek Shake wacky jig. I have found you can use all sorts of soft plastics rigged wacky-style. But my favorites have been Zoom Double Ringers, Centipedes, Fish Doctors, and Swamp Crawlers. Other soft plastics that work well are Ring Fries, Flukes, Senkos, etc. One note about these rigs: Do not set the hook or often you will come up empty! Rather, reel-up the slack and sweep the rod to the side as you reel to put pressure on the fish. That sharp little Gamakatsu hook will do its job! This is a great rig for spawning and post-spawn bass. It is just too easy of a meal for fish to resist!

Week #2
The $25,000 Lure Pack
The Little Pek Jig has played a huge role in my tournament fishing as a co-angler. In 2006, I won $25,000 at the Bassmaster Series Regional in Alabama using the Little Pek Jig and a Zoom Speed Craw on 8# Seaguar fluorocarbon line. This was the start of a new reliance on finesse fishing for me. When fishing is tough and you need bites, light line, a light jig and a small craw is hard to beat! This year I have added the NetBait Mini Kick'n B to my arsenal. It has similar action to the Speed Craw but with a little more bulk and more of a gliding fall. Great stuff! And if you are not a tournament angler - these combinations are also ideal for wading for smallmouth in small creeks and streams!

Week #3
Shakey Head Lure Pack
I have fished Lake St. Clair one time. In 2009 I finished 11th in the FLW Stren Series. I prepared for this event by stocking up on drop-shot gobies and all sorts of tube jigs. But the first day my boater whacked them dragging a Senko rigged on a shakey head. That night I rigged up a half-dozen Zoom Magnum Finesse Worms on 3/16-oz. Giggy Heads (5/0 hook version). I glued the worm in place to get more use out of each worm. Day 2 I caught all my fish on this rig, again fished on 8# Seaguar. I moved from 46th to 11th place - it wasn't until the very last co-angler weighed in that I got bumped out of the top ten cut. Since that day, I have caught a number of key tournament fish on this rig including one on a tough Day 2 in the KY Lake EverStart Tournament this past March. That fish put me in the top ten. I'm looking forward to making good use of this rig again in July at the Detroit River. I've also recently added the Gambler Shakey Shad as an alternative to the worm on this head.

Note: When inserting the dual-barbed peg into the head of the worm, have the worm rotated 90 degrees from where you want it to be. Once fully impaled, rotate the worm back before Texas-rigging the hook. This will lock the worm in place: the barbs create a path going in that if left in the same orientation, makes it easier for them to be pulled out.

Week #4
The Smart Tube Lure Pack
For as long as I have sold Little Pek Jigs, I have fished them inside tubes. So this winter, I created a new jig head that is made specifically for tubes. This head design takes care of some flaws in the Little Pek Jig as rigged in a tube. The new tube jig, called the Little Pek-T, features the twin wire weed guard and a 4/0 EWG hook. The head is tapered making rigging easier and there is a gap between the head and the hook eye to allow for the thickness of the tube. To rig the jig, take the hook point into the tube where the weed guards will end up exiting. Push the head all the way inside then work the hook eye back out the nose of the tube. Note that the hook eye, weed guard and hook shank must all exit the tube at points that are lined up along the length of the tube. Rigged this way allows for an open-hook rig that is still weedless. But remember, even with the open hook, a smallmouth can have a pretty good grip on the bulky plastic tube. The initial hookset will need to force open the mouth to allow the tube to move. The tube must move within the mouth for the hook point to do its job. A second whack can often be advisable if you feel the first hookset may not have been enough. The short-bodied/long-tailed tubes from Hooked-Up Bait are a great match for the Little Pek-T jig, but here is a little secret: 2.5" YUM Crawbugs!
